Mr. Dodge’s Role: Primary structural designer, primary structural point of contact for architect

Tighe & Bond was selected as the SMEP and Civil Engineering Designer for the construction of a new fieldhouse for women’s sports, to be located between the Johnson and Dewitt Family Fields at Yale University, home to their women’s field hockey and softball teams, respectively.

Mr. Dodge’s role in this project was to act as the primary structural engineer for the foundations and superstructure of the new building, executing not only the structural design but also serving as the primary structural point of contact for the architect, construction of the structural analysis and Revit models, and performance of all structural construction administration tasks.

The first level of the building contains satellite coaches’ offices, locker and equipment rooms, and a lobby with access to the second level, ticket office, and restrooms for spectators. The second level consists of an elevated deck for spectators that is level with the top of the adjacent bleachers, as well as an event space and mechanical room in the enclosed areas. A cantilevered, proprietary solar canopy system also provides shelter to spectators.

The building’s structure is comprised of a structural steel frame to support vertical loads, with a concentrically braced frame and a reinforced concrete elevator core providing lateral support at the second level. At the first level, lateral loads are resisted by the concrete elevator core and reinforced CMU panels that are isolated from gravity loads through slotted connections to the building frame. The building’s foundation consists of reinforced concrete piers, foundation walls, and spread footings.

The field house was completed in 2018, and has been a valuable amenity in attracting students to watch and participate in Yale women’s sports.
